Kirby AshleySpecial Enrolled Agent

Enrolled agents are granted unrestricted rights to represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service, demonstrate special competence in tax matters, adhere to ethical standards, and are required to stay current with tax law and regulations by completing a minimum amount of continuing education annually.

“Over and over again courts have said that there is nothing sinister in so arranging one’s affairs as to keep taxes as low as possible. Everybody does so, rich or poor; and all do right, for nobody owes any public duty to pay more than the law demands: taxes are enforced exactions, not voluntary contributions. To demand more in the name of morals is mere cant.”    -Judge Learned Hand

It all started in 1992, the year his son was born. He’d met the mother of his only child while clerking at the Post Office. She was a mail handler. Life got serious. That year, a friend asked him to help him out during tax season. After tax season, he bought a copy of the Internal Revenue Code and started reading.

The next year he hung out his own shingle. He never married. In those days, he would pick up his son on weekends and keep him on his lap while preparing tax returns. He left the Post Office in 1999.

It wasn’t long before he started thinking about taking the Enrolled Agents Exam. By 2004 he’d bought the study materials and begun studying. It was tough. He was a single parent by then and it was a bit of an adjustment. His studies fell by the wayside.

It may have had something to do with him having gone back and finished film school in 2000. Raising a son, running a business and pursuing a film career had taken a toll. It came down to priorities.

It was only after his son moved out in 2013 that he renewed his interest in taking his practice to the next level. He took and passed the Enrolled Agents Exam in 2014. It all came full circle in 2015 when he convinced his contacts in the film industry to help him with a TV commercial.

They’d just finished a short film documentary he’d written, produced and directed on the history of black chess players. They all had day jobs with some of the top advertising agencies in Chicago. It just made sense.

Unfortunately, the financing fell through and he wasn’t able to pull the trigger. But he never gave up on his dream of merging his skills as a tax professional with his talents as a professional filmmaker. Besides, he had a brand new service and he needed to get the word out.

He continued to hone his skills as a tax professional while squirreling away the cash needed to cover the cost of production. Even though he had friends in the industry, television doesn’t come cheap. Plus, he had his own personal, professional standards. The same standards he applies to his tax work.

He brings the same degree of dogged persistence to his tax work as he did to his first of many TV commercials to come. He never gives up; he never says quit. If there’s a setback, he regroups and finds another way to help his client.  He has the expertise, talent, experience and determination to help individuals and small businesses with their tax problems. He’s truly Your Tax Resolution Expert!
